Jared took a seat by himself at an empty table. There were a couple of stains here and there noticeable, but he didn’t care much about it. It had surprised him a bit that he had even been able to find a place to sit for himself in the busy Starbucks. The place was packed with people, the line up to the coffee shop’s counter was leading outside the front door. The drive-through wasn’t any better either. It was all the caffeine-addicts looking for their morning coffee before work.
The place was a jungle, too loud for Jared’s taste. But he quickly got used to it. He placed his cup on the table, staring at it with a exaggerated expression of boredom. After a few seconds like that, he finally lifted it up to his lips, taking the first small sip before placing it back down on the table with the same bored expression drawn on his face. The taste was bitter, mostly because he never added sugar or cream to his coffee, but he always found Starbucks to have a stronger taste than any other type of coffee place. That’s why he usually stayed clear of the it's coffee houses, but he hadn’t had his dose of caffeine in what seemed like forever to him, so it seemed like a good idea at the time. Getting coffee somewhere else would probably mean treking out to another town to find one, and he wasn’t in any mood to do so.
Jared took another sip of the dark liquid, a longer one, almost downing the whole cup. The hot liquid burned his tongue a bit, but he knew it would quickly fade -- like it always did. His expression changed a bit from boredom to a bit-more-awake-but-not-really expression, his eyes more open and alert than before. Most lycans didn’t drink coffee -- maybe it was the taste, or just the fact that their systems obviously didn’t need the caffeine. Either way, none really drank the stuff -- except of course him.
Sometimes he just needed that sense of normality that he wasn‘t different at all from the other humans. He knew he would never actually live a normal life, but he could still try and fool himself sometimes into believing it. And this was just another one of those ways to fool himself.
